Accumulate reference materials
The scenario is that you have 3 cartons of eggs, all of which are labeled incorrectly. One is labeled egg, one is labeled small egg, and one is labeled mixed egg. How many boxes of eggs do you have to open to figure out which is which?
When I first heard this question a few years ago, I thought to myself, “You have to open both,” and then I stopped and said, “NO!!” You only have to open one. Let me tell you how.
Suppose you open a carton of eggs labeled mixed. In fact, there are small eggs in it. Now, you are left with 2 boxes of eggs and you know they are not labeled correctly, right? You should know which egg is in which box because they are not labeled correctly. Therefore, what is marked as mixed may have small ones.
All in all, all you have to do is open a carton of eggs to find out. Then you can say to them, “Can I show you this? This is a little hard to explain.” The idea is simple. No matter what you open, the other two boxes are also labeled incorrectly so you know what’s in them.
