What are they really saying when they say these things to you? Let me crack the code.
When they say they’re interviewing more people, what they’re really saying is, “You’re not really our first choice. We have 25 more people we can talk to, and we’ll get back to you at some point when hell freezes over.”
When they say something has changed about the job since we started interviewing, what they’re really saying is, “You know, we haven’t got our act together and we’re not ready to commit to you because our ideas about the job have changed and you might not be a good fit.”
When they say, “We’re still finalizing some things,” what they’re really saying is, “We’re pretty disorganized. We didn’t have our act together when we started interviewing, and now we’re finding we have to pull things together and figure out what we really need.”
When they say, “We’ll get back to you shortly,” they’re actually telling you, “Don’t call us; we’ll call you.”
When they tell you that they’ve restructured and are reconsidering their options, what they’re really saying is, “Go look at something else; I probably won’t be here very long.”
