What are you arguing about? |No BS recruitment advice

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter gives you advice on negotiating salary with new employees. This was recorded many years ago. Even so, some labor markets are pretty good.

The myth of the passive candidate

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, and I have more no-nonsense recruiting advice to help you do a better job of staffing as an HR professional, hiring manager, or small business owner

Now, as I was making this video in late 2014, I wanted to tell you that the labor market was pretty strong for a lot of technology positions, but the way companies were behaving, I thought was pretty ridiculous

Three thousand or two thousand dollars won’t break the bank, but I’ve seen some organizations argue with candidates over two or three thousand dollars, and if the candidate leaves, it will take them another eight weeks to find the right person. Does this make sense to you?

Because it certainly isn’t for me. The two to three thousand yuan you are arguing about is basically more than the cost of your interview!

I just want to say, don’t fight over meaningless things. Admit it. Candidates are happier. You’re in the closing phase where you’re trying to make a positive impression on the companies you’re competing against, and I gotta tell you, in the tech workforce space, you’re competing for talent right now. You are no longer the only one involved, another company will give it to them. You know, the fact is it’s not a recession anymore. These are strong markets for technical talent. $2000. $3,000 $5,000. What’s the point of arguing about this?

Eventually, you’ll get your people on board. You’ll make them work hard. You’re going to get things done, and you’re going to be able to stand up in front of your competitors within your company and say, “Look at the results I got, and all it cost you was an extra two or three thousand dollars.”
