Expert advice for senior leaders in transformation

First: what you wear and your background. You want to be in front of the camera. Now, for some reason, my lighting isn’t great today. I sat in front of the window so the window pointed towards me. You want light on your face so you can be seen, and you want to be dressed in a way that makes you appear in front of the camera. Make sure you maintain correct eye contact with the camera because usually when I see people, their eye contact is almost non-existent.

So set yourself up for speaker view so you can make eye contact with the camera. Place the camera at the right height so you don’t have to stare at it. As I do now, I’m looking at myself; I’m not looking at the camera. This requires you to go online, which you can do using Zoom on a free account so you can see what’s going on for you.

I use a microphone. I believe the microphone on my laptop is actually pretty good, while most people’s are not. So, document yourself. Are you satisfied with the sound? Play it back. If you’re not happy with the audio, you’ll have to make changes. Your background should make you stand out based on what you’re wearing—nothing particularly distracting. Let us focus on getting you to make eye contact, appear in front of the camera, and greet people with a smile.

If you have a scowl on your face, you know you’re making the conversation serious and therefore they don’t really get a sense of your personality. Don’t be afraid of the twinkle in your eye and the smile on your face, because when you’re in front of the camera, you’re a performer.
