JetBlue adds new Midwest route from New York

JetBlue Airways will launch the first nonstop flight from New York to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE) in March.

JetBlue Airways said on Tuesday that the New York-based airline will offer one daily flight between CLE and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) starting March 30. The route will be operated by a 140-seat Airbus A220-300 aircraft.

Additionally, JetBlue will offer CLE service from two cities: twice daily from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and twice daily from JFK, according to schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.

“This new nonstop route brings an exciting new travel option for our customers,” Scott Carr, JetBlue’s assistant director of commercial operations and revenue, said in a statement. “In addition, it further strengthens CLE’s position as Northeast Ohio’s gateway to the world.”

The airline’s new flights connect not only Cleveland and New York, but also JetBlue’s flights to the Caribbean, Latin America and London Heathrow (LHR). Passengers connecting on JetBlue business class transatlantic Mint will also have access to the new BlueHouse lounge at JFK.

JetBlue plans to achieve “low to mid-single digit” year-over-year growth through 2026, Chief Financial Officer Ursula Hurley said in October. The expansion includes new flights to Josep Talladelas Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN) and Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), as well as expanded service to San Juan Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU).

Cirium schedules show the airline began operating flights to CLE in April 2015, the year after United Airlines closed its hub. JetBlue has connected CLE to BOS since launching service to the Ohio airport, and will connect CLE to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) from 2015 to 2022.

The Cirium schedule shows that JetBlue will compete with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines on the CLE-JFK route. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Frontier Airlines also fly from CLE to New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and United Airlines also flies to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
