Crossroads|Career Perspective

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
The call to the game sent a warning signal to me that I wouldn’t be able to watch the Yankees game. With my phone next to me, I could see the Minnesota Twins home run with no outs in the second game the Yankees had taken the lead. When I hit refresh, I expected to see at least a tie score, and more likely, they were trailing.
Instead, the starting pitcher, a guy who had been injured nearly all season and pitched in just three games before the playoffs, focused and got the first batter in the week’s pop-up and struck out the next two games.
You faced the crossroads but did not give in. It’s one of the reasons why people love and hate exercise. Love, because stories like this are inspiring. Hate, because stories like this will tear your heart out as a Minnesota Twins fan. After all, entering this series, the Timberwolves have lost 13 consecutive playoff games. This year, he will be different. After all, they set the major league single-season home run record, more than 40 more than the Yankees’ record.
This season will be different, but they meet a pitcher at a crossroads in the game who has the willpower to push through the danger.
Maybe this is all a lesson to you. Maybe you’re used to being at the crossroads of big moments and making excuses for why you didn’t win the moment.
No matter how you approach it. Ultimately, your choices define you.
This is true at work. This is true for how you deal with powerful people who make decisions that affect you.
Winners find a way to win. Losers have excuses and good explanations.
