You are given 12 balls, 11 of them are identical and 1 is heavier. How to find the heavier ball in 3 steps?
Which egg is in which carton?
The problem lies here. You are given 12 balls and a scale. Of the 12 balls, 11 are the same with slight differences. How can you find the heavier ball among these 12 balls using the scale only 3 times?
Here is the solution.
Take 5 balls and 5 balls and weigh them. If the scales are equal, you can discard 10 balls and only weigh the other 2 balls to get the answer. This will be the second time the scale is used, in which case you will notice that the heavier ball starts to move.
On the other hand, if the first time you weigh 5 and 5 balls, one of the sets is heavier, then the heavier set is also heavier compared to the 2 balls (this is the second use of the scale), and if they weigh the same, then the 5th ball is the ball you are looking for.
If 1 of the 2 ball sets is heavier, take the heavier 2 ball set and weigh each other (this is the third use of the scale) and you will find that the heavier ball is the ball you are looking for.
