What made you think you were the best person for this job?

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Are your interview scores up to par? Here I answer one of the most annoying questions asked in interviews.

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, I’m called the Big Game Hunter because I’m constantly hunting down leaders and people who work in organizations. Well, it looks like it’s almost 100 years old, but it’s actually closer to 40 years. Today, I’m going to talk to you about a tough interview question that organizations ask during interviews.

The problem is this. Ready? I will take you seriously. So why do you think you’re the best person I’ve ever interviewed for this job? Oh, don’t they look like they’re taking this seriously? This is a ridiculous question.

We all know this. But it works. Most job seekers get nervous.

They started getting anxious, defensive, fumbling for answers, stammering, and acting just like I was acting now. So, this is not the correct answer. Instead, what you want to do is pause for a second, act like you’re thinking about this, look them in the eye, and say, you know, I really don’t know if I’m the most qualified person you’ve ever met.

But what I do is I list four or five different things that you do that relate to what they’re looking for. I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter.
