Findings for December 2025 – The Garage Gym Experiment

Rack attached or standalone?

Here are several potential rack-mount options and standalone machines for your home gym, ordered from highest to lowest by rack-mount voting percentage.

Here’s a close-up view of the “not interested in either” vote.

In this section, you’ll also see year-over-year changes. Smith machines, belt squats, lat pulldowns/low rows, and functional trainers all showed significant increases in votes for rack trainers compared to last year.

Specific questions about home gym exercise

Here are a few questions about your home gym workout experience and how it compares to last year.
Overall, the results indicate that most people who train at home do enjoy this lifestyle.

Some standouts include:

  • 64% of people say they exercise more in their home gym than in a public gym.
  • 63% of people work out harder in a home gym than in a public gym.
  • 78% of people exercise more because they have a home gym.
  • 86% prefer home gym workouts to public gyms.
  • Only 26% said they were less motivated at a home gym than at a public gym.

Level of interest in secondhand markets, DIY projects, and home gym hacks

Interest in these three potential ways/aspects of building a home gym isn’t particularly high, but the secondary market ranks higher than home gym hacks or DIY projects.

Everyone received less “high coupon” than last year.
