Important lessons television teaches executive job seekers

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

I took lessons from television and applied them to my job search tailored to executives. (from the archives)

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter. I’m known as the “Big Game Hunter” because I coach people on big game. This is a lesson I want to offer you, and I think it comes straight from television.

This lesson is really about. . . Well, let me tell you the story briefly. How many crime dramas have you seen, where weeks are compressed into an hour, and the good guys win in the end? This is the plot of almost every show I’ve ever watched. Maybe it’s the same for you.

Unfortunately, this is what happened. Job seekers have unrealistic expectations of what is going to happen. Now, first of all, this lesson is valid.

The lesson is that people miss something along the way. And, as a job seeker, one of the things you have to do is figure out where you’re going wrong. This doesn’t necessarily have to do with your background flaws, but it may have to do with your ability to execute.

So, for you as a manager, for you as a senior professional, I want to remind you that while you can do the job, you may not be capable yet. You may not yet understand what it takes to land the job. Even though you’ve hired hundreds of employees in the past, it’s different on the other side of the desk.

I can’t tell you the number of executives I’ve worked with who hire so many people and you put them in an interview seat and all of a sudden, they’re stammering idiots. And you don’t necessarily want to be that. Most of you won’t, but from then on you will probably become amateurs, making mistakes and admitting completely unnecessary things about your background.

Now, I want to clarify something. I hate people who sanitize each other when I interview them. I like people with personality.

But they are focused. They are targeted. They know exactly what they want to achieve.

It is important to build the right network of senior partners with executive search firms

I want to make sure that, from your interview perspective, you don’t make the mistake of thinking this is the sprint you’re going through. You don’t make the mistake of thinking you can go into an interview without any preparation. Just like a meeting you go into unprepared for, be able to do well.

This is not the case. That’s not what happens on TV. Eventually, they discovered the mistake and the crime was solved during the course of the investigation.

Life is not a TV show. People make mistakes too. They make a lot of money while looking for a job.

To you, as an executive, I would just say, you have to do your homework. You can’t act like an amateur. You have to go out and sell yourself and be prepared to talk about your experience in a way that your audience can easily understand. . . The audience is the people you are interviewing. . . Learn how to deliver for them.

This requires some preparation and understanding of the role. So, I have some great videos. Watch what has been called the best question to ask in any interview.

There’s a range of things in the interview playlist that I think you’ll find helpful. But, at the end of the day, I can’t prepare you for this. But you know how important preparation is.

After all, you haven’t been improvising your entire career. You are fully prepared. This is how you get to your seat.

Don’t take shortcuts here. Don’t make those rookie mistakes that will cost you. I’m Jeff Altman.

I hope you find this helpful. My website is TheBigGameHunter.us. There are a lot of things you can watch, listen to, or read that will help you find a job faster. And if we’re connected on LinkedIn, please send a connection request on LinkedIn.com forward slash I’m forward slash TheBigGameHunter.

Finally, find a coach. I’m a coach. I’d be happy to help you, but you can find the information on my website.

But, at the end of the day, find someone to guide you and help you achieve your goals so that you don’t spend unnecessary months fiddling around and making mistakes that wouldn’t be necessary if you had someone guiding you. Hope you have a nice day. careful.
