Education and Jobs

you’ll never make new friends

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Is it any wonder that you don’t have internet when you need it?

Disengaged interviewer

I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, Head Coach at JobSearch.Community. This is one of those stupid career mistakes I want to point out to you, whether you’re looking for a job or not. Hopefully you fall into the “not” category, not because I don’t think you can find a job, but I want you to start thinking ahead when you are looking for a job. This mistake is a classic mistake people make in their careers, and it’s the notion of never meeting new people and never building relationships with new people.

They’re doing the same thing over and over again every day, and then they think, Hey, I’m looking for a job. Who will help me? The answer is no, because you know the same four people at work. You see the same three faces on your commute, but if you’re driving, you can’t even see that face.

You go to the same place every day for lunch, nod to people, that’s how engaged you are. And then you commute home to your wife, your husband, your partner, your kids, and you never get to meet anyone new, and the statistics are very clear, 70% of jobs are filled through networking, and 70% or 49% of those are filled through introductions to people you know through your network. Now, I’m not saying this is as simple as meeting new people.

I mean, that’s the launch point, and then from there, you have to contact them from time to time. A quick email, a quick text, a quick message, a note in the mail. You remember what email is, right? No matter what form you take, you’ll stay connected to people.

Christmas, the holidays, are a great time of year for everyone to do this because you can just write a quick note to someone and then you can update them then. The holidays are a wonderful time of year to reconnect. I saw your name.

I just wanted to check in with you and see how you were doing. What a great time to take a moment to do this when things are slow or after the holidays. It’s really very simple.

If you don’t start connecting with people, no one will be able to help you when you need it, and when you do, you have to be ready to help others. Well! Do you think they would help you if they knew you well, or if you did nothing to help them when they needed you? So, be a polite person. Start connecting with more people.

Start helping more people. It will go a long way when you need help. I’m Jeff Altman.

I hope you find this helpful. Please note all the help happening here. Help, help, help.
