Stupid Resume Mistakes – Target
Hello! I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m known as the “Big Game Hunter” because I’ve been searching for leaders and staff organizations for over 40 years. Now, one of the most classic pieces of job-hunting advice is to connect with your interviewer.
This doesn’t mean you talk about your respective tennis matches. Even if this is what’s on their LinkedIn profile, you can keep their name on file to mention when it comes up during the interview process. But what it really means is how do you interact with this person? How do you talk to them as equals rather than thinking they are superior and you are inferior? So, your whole strategy is to treat this person as relaxed and calm as a companion, a friend.
I’m not telling jokes throughout, but again, the idea of speaking to them as an equal is critical to how you demonstrate connection with them. Now, the bottom line is, you probably won’t get hired because you don’t have the skills they are looking for. It doesn’t matter.
But when a tiebreaker comes up, they look for that connection. So when looking for a tiebreaker, they want to see someone they enjoy being with and can trust, and that’s what that connection allows them to do is feel comfortable with you so they can choose between you and the shy guy. Given equal skills, they’ll choose you every time.
