Once you’ve opened up a core set of cards that earn transferable points, it’s time to move to co-branded airline cards. Opening a card or two with your favorite airline can provide additional benefits, faster access to elite status, and the chance to earn additional rewards on every purchase.
The Air France-KLM World Elite Mastercard issued by Bank of America isn’t all that different from its mid-tier airline card counterparts. While it has fewer perks than some other options, it still offers good value for those who fly with Air France and KLM at least a few times a year.
In March, existing cardholders will see their cards converted from World Elite Mastercard to Visa Signature. This means some benefits and coverage, such as extended warranties and car rental insurance, will change on or after March 20. Air France-KLM Mastercard Offers
For a mid-sized airline card, the Air France-KLM Mastercard offers limited benefits, but there are still some notable perks.
The card’s most notable feature is a 5,000-mile bonus on every account anniversary. However, the anniversary bonus has a spending requirement, which is unusual. Fortunately, the spending requirement is very low: $50 in the last year of membership. Even if you rarely use the card, it’s not a difficult threshold to reach.
According to TPG’s valuation, those 5,000 miles are worth $65; covering more than 70% of the card’s annual fee.
You will also receive 20 XP for each account anniversary.
You can also earn more XP by spending money on your card. You’ll earn 80 XP after spending at least $15,000 on the card in a calendar year (100 XP total, including the 20 XP you receive on the card anniversary). If you spend at least $25,000 on the card in a calendar year, you’ll earn an additional 60 XP, bringing your potential annual total to 160 XP on annual spending with the card.
These annual XP bonuses can help you reach the 100 XP required to achieve Flying Blue Silver status. Silver membership benefits include priority check-in and boarding on SkyTeam-operated flights, free standard seat selection and an additional free checked bag.
Plus, you get pretty standard perks for a mid-range travel card, like no foreign transaction fees and contactless payment options.
If you plan to spend a lot on this card each year, this may be worth it for you. Otherwise, consider the value of your base XP and 5,000-mile bonus for the card’s $89 annual fee.
Earn miles with the Air France-KLM Mastercard
The Air France-KLM Mastercard allows you to earn miles through two useful bonus categories.
With this card, you can earn 3 miles for every USD 1 spent on Air France, KLM and SkyTeam member airlines, as well as eligible dining purchases. Earn 1.5 miles on all other purchases.
While those prices aren’t amazing, they’re certainly not bad — especially since dining was recently added as a bonus category.
Based on our valuation of Flying Blue miles at 1.3 cents per mile, Air France, KLM and SkyTeam members earn 3.9% on purchases and dining, and almost 2% on all other purchases.
In fact, if you need an Air France-KLM Mastercard and you fly with the airline frequently to use those miles, the Air France-KLM Mastercard works as a non-rewards spending card.
Redeem miles with the Air France-KLM Mastercard
The best way to redeem Flying Blue miles is to redeem them for a flight. Flying Blue uses dynamic pricing so there is no award chart to refer to. This means prices can change at any time, making it difficult to find the sweet spot.
In addition to redeeming your miles for Air France and KLM flights, you can also redeem your miles for award tickets on other SkyTeam airlines such as Delta. This can be a great way to find award tickets at a better price than using a specific airline’s own award program.
Flying Blue often offers promotional awards, which are heavily discounted award tickets. These tickets often have more restrictions than standard Flying Blue award tickets, so be sure to read all relevant terms and conditions.
TPG contributing editor Matt Moffitt recently redeemed 60,000 Flying Blue miles plus $330 in taxes and fees for a one-way business class flight from Valencia Airport (VLC) in Spain to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) via Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS).

Is the Air France-KLM Mastercard worth it?
For Air France and KLM loyalists, the Air France-KLM Mastercard is definitely worth considering, with its reasonable annual fee and elite status boost. However, if you don’t fly with Air France and KLM at least twice a year, I recommend you consider a different airline card or a regular travel card that earns transferable rewards.
