This is simple Shrimp Piccata It looks like a restaurant-worthy meal, but it’s actually an easy weeknight dinner! In fact, you can make this classic piccata dish with simple ingredients in just 15 minutes.
One of my favorite “fancy” dishes is chicken piccata with butter sauce and salty capers. While I love the chicken version, I think I might prefer this simple shrimp piccata.
The sweetness of the shrimp pairs really well with the butter, lemon curd, and capers.
Shrimp piccata is often served with pasta or rice. Also delicious with zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash and polenta.

Ingredients for Shrimp Piccata
- shrimp: Since shrimp are the star of this dish, look for medium-sized shrimp. Make sure they are raw and thawed, and remove the hulls and veins. Frozen shrimp is okay, just defrost well and pat dry.
- flour: To get the shrimp nicely browned and slightly crispy, flour is the perfect ingredient. The flour also helps thicken the sauce. Cornstarch works too.
- Butter and olive oil: It wouldn’t be piccata without butter. Add it to the sauce at the end to ensure a smooth buttery sauce. For extra buttery flavor, add a tablespoon of olive oil to the shrimp while cooking them.
- White Wine: Piccata almost always uses white wine. If you don’t want to cook with wine, just switch to chicken or vegetable stock.
- garlic: Fresh garlic is the best choice for making delicious marinara sauce. Minced or pureed garlic will also work, but add a little more to get the same flavor.
- Capers: It wouldn’t be piccata without capers. Capers are very salty and salty. Add them to taste and be careful not to oversalt the rest of the dish. If you don’t have capers, you can substitute salty green olives

- Side salad. Mix up what’s in your vegetable drawer, buy pre-made bagged salad mixes, or make a specialty salad like arugula salad.
- Roasted mixed vegetables. Add a layer of your favorite vegetable combination to a greased baking sheet or pan. Sprinkle with olive oil, pepper, garlic salt and acid such as lemon juice or balsamic. Bake at 375° for 20 minutes or more, depending on the thickness of the vegetables (butternut squash, for example, will need more time, asparagus not).
- Roasted Broccoli. You’ll add Parmesan cheese to this delicious vegetarian dish.
- Roasted root vegetables. Skip the soggy baby carrot bags and roast some root vegetables with a mix of carrots, onions, sweet potatoes, parsnips and more.
- Sauté vegetables. Make a quick side dish by sauteing your favorite vegetable mixture right away. You can also add some fresh mushrooms, zucchini, or spinach to the shrimp piccata.

Tips and Tricks for Cooking Shrimp Piccata
Shrimp may be easy to find and easy to cook, but a few helpful tips can help you get the most out of this small protein.
- Thaw frozen shrimpyou can let it thaw in the refrigerator for four hours or overnight, or you can pour it into a colander or a bowl of water and run cool (not warm) water over it until it thaws. It only takes about 10-15 minutes.
