Stupid resume mistakes

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
These are basically stupid things people do that turn out to be very costly.
Another stupid resume mistake
I am Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m the head coach of JobSearch.Community, welcome to “Stupid resume mistake.” God, I’m so sorry we have to do this, but people still forward resumes to me – even though I almost exclusively coach – and I’m shocked at how bad they are. So let me start by talking about some basic mistakes that many job seekers make that are very painful to read.
First, your Resume does not prove your candidacy. There is nothing in your resume that indicates you meet the requirements for the job. Unless you make this case, why do you think you’ll get an interview? Second place is actually you Apply for jobs instead of trying to get into organizations online. There are many tools that can help you identify hiring managers so you don’t have to go through Applicant Tracking System (ATS).
Third: After submitting your resume, Not customized yet. So even if you do have these skills, you haven’t really done a good enough job of highlighting how your background matches the employer. Next, people still submit cover letters. Now, if you really want to be smart, all you have to do is Make your cover letter page one of your resume and you use a format of nickname “T-square.” I developed it a few years ago and others are starting to adopt it. The concept is that you enter the requirements for the position in one column (the left column) and the time and recent use of that specific skill in the second column. You use this page as one of your resumes. Why? Because the Applicant Tracking System will treat all keywords on the first page as only being in the document and benefiting your submission.
Do what recruiters do
The fifth place is you It takes a lot of time to apply. Some companies stop really paying attention to resume submissions if they happen too long after the hand is raised. Why do they do this? Simple: they received hundreds of resumes. Do you expect them to sit there and read everything before deciding who to interview? No, they don’t do that. They immediately start taking action and eventually they stop paying attention at all because someone is running away. Their job is to fill the gap, and they want to do it as quickly as possible. They don’t want to be interviewed forever. There are tools that can help you apply quickly, but they don’t customize your resume, which makes them less than ideal.
Resumes need to be customized quickly. Also, regarding cover letters: people send cover letters as attachments, No one actually opens these attachments. Another thing people do is Resume font is too small For readers. Now, look at my face – do I look 24? Most people in HR are not 24 years old. For veterans who are trying to cram more details into their resumes and make the font size smaller and smaller, the people and systems viewing the resume can run into trouble. keep until At least 10 points, preferably 11 or 12 points.
Another error is Embed your address as title at the top of your resume. Some systems have problems with this, so don’t embed the header. The same goes for “Page 2 of 2”. We’re not reading the page; We are reading the screen. People read screens. When they print their resume they won’t know it’s page two. If anything, they really Only care about the first page– One page and a quarter, that’s two “page downs.” That’s what people read. You don’t have to number the pages.
One big thing people don’t do: I understand why your full address isn’t there because identity theft is a problem, but you City, state and zip code must be included on resume. When the system parses it, it knows where you are. Some systems will Filter out resumes that do not contain a zip code Because they don’t know where you are. Let’s say they’re looking for a job opening in Savannah, Georgia, and the resume they receive includes a phone number for anywhere in the country, but no specific location. How do they know if you are local? You don’t tell them. So enter the city, state, and zip code. If you think not including it will fool people, they’ll just exclude you.
These are some of the stupid resume mistakes I see. If there are more, please enter them as comments; it will help others. Hope you have a nice day. careful.
