Policy Change: American Express updates Centurion Lounge access rules

Competition for airport lounge access is becoming increasingly fierce, with American Express the latest issuer to announce changes.

According to information shared with TPG, the card issuer will change the Centurion Lounge usage rules starting July 8. Amex says these updates are designed to help preserve the Centurion Lounge experience by ensuring cardholders (and their guests) continue to have a comfortable place to relax and recharge while traveling.

The new policy includes two key changes.

First, the cardholder’s guests need to be on the same flight as the cardholder to access the Centurion Lounge. Currently, passengers are not required to travel on the same flight, providing some flexibility when traveling with companions.

Second, American Express has introduced new time-based restrictions on stopovers. Beginning July 8, Cardmembers (and eligible guests) will only be able to access the Centurion Lounge during a layover five hours before their departure flight. This brings Centurion Lounge use more in line with policies already in place at many other airport lounges.

These changes will apply to American Express Platinum Card®, American Express Business Platinum Card®American Express Business Platinum Card®, Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card. The updated rules will affect Centurion lounges in the United States as well as select international locations, including London Heathrow (LHR), Tokyo Haneda (HND) and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).

American Express said that as demand for airport lounge access continues to grow, the company remains committed to providing eligible card members with a premium lounge experience.

bottom line

While the changes won’t take effect until mid-2026, they mark an ongoing shift toward tighter access controls at airport lounges. Cardmembers who travel frequently with guests or plan long-term stays may want to incorporate the updated rules into future travel plans.
