Avianca to launch flights from San Francisco to Guatemala in June

California’s Bay Area will launch new nonstop flights to Central America.
Avianca announced Friday it will launch a new nonstop route from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport (GUA).
This will be a new seasonal route, so flights will operate during the summer.
Avianca, a member of Star Alliance, is no stranger to Northern California.
The Bogota-based airline currently operates flights between San Salvador, El Salvador and San Francisco, the main West Coast hub of its U.S. partner United Airlines.
Avianca flights between SFO and GUA will start from June 1st to August 31st.

The following is the itinerary. As you can see, the eastbound flight departs in the morning and lands in the Guatemalan capital in the early afternoon; westbound, red-eye service:

- GUA-SFO: Departs at 1:20 a.m. and arrives at 6:25 a.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (all times local)
Important to note: Avianca has already scheduled a one-stop service to Salvador International Airport (SAL), so the same aircraft flying from SFO to GUA will continue to SAL.
However, a spokesperson confirmed that Avianca will also continue to operate nonstop flights between California and El Salvador.
Travelers who want to use points and miles to book Avianca flights can transfer at a 1:1 ratio from four major transferable rewards programs into the airline’s Avianca LifeMiles program:
You can also search for partner rewards through United’s MileagePlus program or other Star Alliance partners, such as Air Canada Aeroplan.
Avianca plans to operate its SFO-GUA flights using a 180-seat Airbus A320, which can accommodate 180 passengers. The aircraft includes Avianca Americas Business Class, which offers wider seats with legroom in the first three rows.
Avianca, however, offers a more premium soft-touch offering for its elevated seat options, including an in-flight amenity package.
“The launch of this route responds to customer demand for more connection options between key destinations and is part of Avianca’s strategy to continue strengthening its international network through efficient and reliable operations,” Alejandro Benitez, Avianca’s senior vice president of corporate development, said in a statement on Friday.
Avianca continues to expand its presence in North America. The total number of flights to the United States will increase by 12% in 2025 compared with 2024, according to aviation analytics company Cirium.
It’s not just a matter of new flights, either: last spring, the airline partnered with TAP Air Portugal to open a new airport lounge in Miami.
