How do I email a recruiter? I had an interview from last week and was selected, but I couldn’t answer their calls or respond to their emails because my grandmother passed away late last week and I was even more busy with the funeral.
Question: How do I email a recruiter? I had an interview early last week and was selected, but I couldn’t answer their calls or respond to emails because my grandmother passed away last week and I was busy with the funeral. So how do you contact a recruiter now?
I would politely say you have a phone. You notice that you received the email. A quick reply saying, “My grandmother passed away. I’ll contact you next week” would have been a smart move. But you didn’t do that.
This is what you do. You receive an email; reply to the email. You can call them and tell them, “I’m sorry I’m unavailable. My grandmother passed away. I was traveling and I’m back now. If you’re still interviewing, I’d appreciate it if we could schedule an interview.” You make it so easy.
I personally encourage calling, but most people can’t get through on the phone these days. Leave a voicemail so they can hear your voice and hear that you mean it, which is better than email. If they don’t contact you, you can follow up via email the next day. And then the email would go something like this…the subject line would say something effective: “I left you a voicemail yesterday.” The body would say, “I left you a voicemail saying that the reason I didn’t respond last week was that my grandmother passed away. We’re dealing with a funeral, and, you know, frankly, it’s upsetting to my family and me. So, if you’re still interviewing, I want to be considered. Can we schedule next steps?” If people are still being interviewed, they’re going to get that message.
