Should you answer personal questions from a recruiter you just met?
Should you answer personal questions from a recruiter you just met? I bet you’re a woman asking this question because this is bullshit that a lot of women deal with. “So, you’re married? Yes, with kids?”
Now, in the United States, these issues are illegal. But I would politely respond to this person, this recruiter, and say, “What does this have to do with my qualifications for this position? I’ve been to too many interviews where I’ve been swayed after someone asked me a similar question. I’m sure that’s not your intention, but please understand that I want to keep this on a purely professional level for now so there’s no risk of this happening.”
So you explain in three sentences why you’re not going to answer personal questions. “I’m sure this wasn’t your intention, but I’ve been accosted in the past,” which puts them off. Don’t answer personal questions.
