I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m the head coach at JobSearch.Community. Today’s question is, what should I write in the subject line of an email when applying for a job? Now, for most of you. . . In fact, there are two answers. We’re going to start with a scenario that works for most people, you see something online, you see some kind of ad, you see something that a company or a recruiting firm has cast its net on, and you’re applying for a position that way.
Therefore, the subject line might include the title of the position so the reader has a clear idea of what you are applying for. If the company asks you to provide a job code or some other designation… . . Also include what specific job you are applying for. So, as an example, it might say, Position 2714 Accountant and mention a line of business.
So what you’re doing is making it clear to your readers why you’re sending the email. Because, after all, you have to remember their inbox. You are thinking about an email you want to send.
They receive many such emails throughout the day. So you’re helping them sort their inbox and they can look at resumes for that job and act on them. However, there is a second condition when people apply for jobs.
That means you were recommended by someone. Now, in this case, what you’re saying is, I was recommended by so-and-so. So they know you’re not a stranger submitting a resume for a job.
You are the one who has an introduction to them. You then use the body of the email in both cases to explain why you are qualified for the job. So, this letter is not difficult.
But the essence of it is, you’re trying to make the reader understand why you’re there and why you’re emailing them. I hope you find this helpful. And visit and join JobSearch.Community. Have a nice day.
