For experienced professionals, this is no nonsense and can help you land your next position faster.

If you are over 50 and applying through a job site or portal, you are not looking for a job. You are donating data to a black hole. Stop tweaking your resume for ATS. I want to give you some different strategies that seasoned professionals can use. I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. People hire me to provide job search coaching and career advice around the world without a bachelor’s degree. I make the process of finding and succeeding in a job easier.

Step One: Your resume is not a history book. This is a marketing brochure. Delete all content before 2010. If a skill doesn’t solve the problem they have today, then it’s baggage. What you’re selling isn’t years of experience. We don’t want to buy that anymore. This sounds expensive and slows things down. We are selling shorter startup times and reduced risk.

Second, stop looking for a full-time job and instead look for the problem. Reach out to CEOs of mid-sized companies. Don’t ask for work. Provide a partial project. It bypasses HR, avoids agency screening filters, and lets you prove your return on investment without paying benefits. Once you’re in the building, consulting assignments often turn into high-level positions or at least high-level positions.

Third, your LinkedIn shouldn’t look like a tombstone. Publish articles three times a week about future trends in your industry. If you’re not talking about the impact of artificial intelligence or automation on your niche, you sound like a relic. Control the narrative. You don’t want to come across as a weirdo, right? You want to come across as a problem solver.
