I Discuss common mistakes people make.
You know, this is a video that, frankly, I want to encourage you. If what you’re doing isn’t working at all, I want you to take some action.
The first action is to talk to other people and listen to their opinions before taking action. Now, I know that I am a headhunter by trade (I no longer do recruiting). I’ve dealt with people who have decided to change and a lot of agents, and when candidates contact them, their basic reaction is, “Oh, that’s terrible. You were treated horribly. Get out, get out, get out.” But that really doesn’t help you.
What works for you is to do a postmortem before you decide to move forward, before you nail down your approach. Review the reasons for failure. Isn’t that what you’re doing that you just haven’t shown yet? Is this the essence of what you do? It’s just something you don’t like. Is it your boss? Is there something you can learn from your relationship with your boss? You know what I’m going to say.
Don’t just jump from one frying pan to another. Take a moment to review your situation. Also, I will speak for myself, there have been times when I endured terrible working conditions and chose to live with them because, financially, it was difficult to leave and start over. You know, as a search professional, every time you change organizations, people will find it difficult to find you right away. You are the old company trying to capture leads, offer help as a non-competitor, and he can walk away with the files.
But, you know, I decided to put up with these things for the long term because I was worried that my income would be adversely affected. I made a conscious decision to live with it. You’ll want to check it out yourself, too, because in some cases it does make sense to stay a little longer. But also look at exit strategies. Do you understand where I’m going? You have to proceed with caution and look at your decisions carefully and maturely, rather than simply saying “I’ve had enough and I’m getting out of here.”
So think twice before taking action. Looking back at your situation, what can you gain from the learning experience? You can talk to the people there and basically say, “Okay, what am I missing? Why is this happening? Why am I getting this feedback? Can you translate what my manager is saying about me? Are they at fault?”
Again, your friends or family will be able to help you here, or colleagues, coaches like me can help you. But, at the end of the day, address the issue before taking action, because maybe that’s what you’re doing. Maybe you can solve some problems there. If you can’t do that, get out. Life is too short to tolerate an abusive environment.
Really get out.
