In this video, I offer five super simple ways to network if you’re an introvert.

Job Search Strategies for Introverts

If you’re an introvert, that doesn’t mean socializing requires you to stand in some room, drinking a bad drink, trying to figure out how to break into a group of people who are laughing and seem to know each other. So I want to give you five ways you can try to break out and build some connections. I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. People hire me to provide job search coaching and career advice worldwide without a bachelor’s degree because I make the process of finding a job easier.

The first step, the first tip, I should say: Reconnect with people from your past, your quote-unquote passive network. The easiest way is to reach out to people you already know – people from your past, people who live on your phone but you haven’t spoken to in a long time. Maybe what you say to them is, “It feels like a hundred years since we last communicated. I thought I’d reach out to you and see how you’re doing.” The idea is to make it really easy to reach people. It’s a text message, an email, a phone call where you can leave a message. all is well.

Tip Two: Focus on quality rather than quantity. What matters is not how many people you reach, but that you find two to three people a week who are in roles you admire and send them personalized contact requests. Mention an article you saw they wrote or a video you observed them on so you have a reason to contact them. And then send them messages about informational conversations, because it’s not about finding a job; it’s about finding a job. But learn from them. Prepare a list of questions to help you have the conversation more easily.

A third technique is to leverage niche online communities, such as Slack or Discord or industry-specific forums, where you can reach a smaller group of people. Maybe they have a recruitment pipeline, maybe they have a job pipeline, but engage by asking questions first so you can have discussions with people. It’s that simple.

One last tip: Attend a micro-event or workshop. Skip big meetings. Go to smaller places, maybe where you learn a specific skill set, like a coding workshop, a design sprint, or some aspect of artificial intelligence. But what it does do is give you a built-in conversation starter so you don’t have to rely on pointless small talk.
