Is there anything I should be aware of if a recruiter calls me?

What should I pay attention to if a recruiter contacts me? How should I respond?

The Recruiter Mindset: The Ultimate Guide to Working with Headhunting Recruiters

I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I coach people in organizations, and coaching often takes place in the workplace. So that might be relevant to your job search in terms of recruiting, being a better manager or leader, like I said, generally being more effective at work.

The question I got from someone basically translated to, if I get a call from a recruiter, is there anything I should be aware of? I don’t think “looking for” is the right choice of term because it’s almost confrontational. I start by asking the person to repeat their name and the company they work for. So this way it gets registered in your mind and you can write it down.

If this is the name of a company you’ve never heard of before, chances are it’s a third-party recruiter. Once you hear the name and write it down, you know, the easiest place for me to start is can you tell me about the position that you’re recruiting for and what is it about my background that piqued your interest? The reason I say that is they will be deep into the evaluation process, but you don’t know what goals they are looking for. So, you don’t want to talk to them about a job that doesn’t interest you, right? Consider it a good practice if you do this, but, you know, you want to understand the context of what they’re trying to understand about you, so that you can tailor your answer to what’s important to them, rather than just talking about what you do.

Remember, from their perspective, they’re trying to fill a vacancy, right? So you want to know what the job is so you can talk about your experience and whether it’s a good fit. Now, the question you may be asking is, what is the salary level for this position? Well, it depends. Yes, of course, it depends.

But can you give me a sense of the scope of the role? Well, it depends. I understand this. But, you know, I don’t want to waste my time talking to you about a job that pays too little.

How much money do you make? I asked you first, just kidding. Well, I can’t reveal that. why not? You know, there’s a dance that you might have to do normally with a new employee in your company. . . sorry. . . Contact agency recruiters who are concerned that if they reveal that the price is too low for you, they won’t stand a chance of convincing you.

So, just understand the crap that’s going on. One thing to note is that they do not reveal how much they are paid to dance. Good clients may or may not disclose who the customer is because they don’t know if they can trust you to contact the company directly.

So, to me, that’s not a problem per se. Can you give me an idea of who the customers are and what they do? Well, this is a big deal. Yes.

Where is it located? OK OK How big is the department I will lead, direct, or work in? OK

You start to notice if they can provide you with information about the company and the position, because that shows you whether they have a good enough relationship to talk to you about the job and whether you should listen. I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you find this helpful.
