Best Yoga Mat (2025), tested and reviewed

Wired asked popular YouTube yoga teacher Sara Beth the most important tips for buying the best yoga mat:

Thicker is not better. You still want to support your balance by creating a strong connection to the ground below you, so the thickness is 3 to 5 mm. You can always add more pads to your knees in the center, but too much pads in front and back, and movement of hands and feet may disrupt your balance.

Find good grip. For those who are hot yoga or sweating, make sure your mats get more nervous when they are wet. The washable design is more hygienic. A mat that is finished with small fibers can be placed in the washing machine (manufacturer instructions recommended) or the mat can be selected and then covered before wiping and washing after the meeting.

Bring a travel mat. For holidays, you can fold in the suitcase or roll a thin, lightweight, 0.059-inch (1.5mm) mat. They work great on hotel room carpets, but you can always keep the towel on your knees if you need more mats. I also practice yoga in the hotel room, only the bath towels are arranged like mats.

Make it easy to exercise. If you plan to do your mat like a gym, weights, yoga and HIIT, consider investing in a 5 by 8 foot giant mat (like a gorilla mat) that should not be moved. These are usually heavier and stronger, which will help you stay in place while moving.
