Artist Daniela García Hamilton

A series of mixed canvases by Mexican-American artist Daniela García Hamilton. García Hamilton received his bachelor’s degree in painting and painting from California State University in Long Beach. Her work explores the rituals and traditions she experienced as a child of immigrant parents. García Hamilton integrates colors and patterns throughout the process, exploring portraits of her family members and environments that are fabricated to draw attention to socio-political commentary on past and current immigration experiences.
García Hamilton and Charlie James Gallery are exhibiting for the first time. Her works involve the combination of embroidery and oil painting. As the first generation of Americans, García Hamilton investigates traditional legacy, inevitable assimilation, and the way family history is replayed over time. She draws inspiration from archives of family photos and stories, integrating family members between generations and boundaries. Many of the works in the exhibition include García Hamilton’s late grandfather and her young nephew, his great-grandson, who never had the chance to meet. Her use of embroidery similarly reflects her family history, as it was accepted after her grandfather’s death. García Hamilton’s grandparents were both working in textiles, and her grandfather was also a family storyteller.
“Amanecer/Atardecer” is on display at Charlie James Gallery in California until August 2. All photos by Ofstudio Photography.
