“Affordable” Tesla is the model Y. This is what it really means.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in a second-quarter earnings call last week that Tesla’s long-standing “lower cost” new car will actually be the stripped model. Now, details about the upcoming car are leaking.

Tesla enthusiast Luca Presti (via Teslarati) shared a Chinese video on Saturday detailing some of the more “affordable” model Y.

Compared to the currently available Y, Presti’s list of differences is long, but it comes down to using cheaper materials and removing some more luxurious features to make the car less expensive to manufacture.

The biggest change in the exterior so far is the lack of a glass roof that has been replaced by the same solid panels as the rest of the vehicle and there are no light strips on the front or rear. The reflective part of the tailgate also disappeared. Even though we’ve seen rumors about this version have a shorter wheelbase and less legroom, it seems to be roughly the same as the current model Y shared by the video Presti.

Inside, the rear display has been removed, the seats are partially covered with textiles (rather than vegetarian leather), and the number of speakers has been reduced. The center console is now divided into two parts. In what seems to be a particularly annoying change, even the coat hook disappears.

Notateslaapp summarizes a list of changes to the lower cost model Y, which includes things that are invisible in the leak, but include things that are fairly easy to remove, such as heated and ventilated seats and power reclining rear seats.

Tesla has made a similar Mexican version 3, which also has textile seats and no rear entertainment screens. Whether the new, cheaper models will be available more widely remains to be seen.

Whether this stripped model is worth buying is another matter, and it depends largely on the price. Tesla’s standard models include many advanced features that are not usually seen on entry-level variants of competing vehicles, so Tesla can afford to remove some of them and remain competitive (at the right price). However, if the leak is accurate, it is indeed the peeling model y, and the missing feature may be a pill that some buyers have a hard time swallowing.
