3 things to do when your dream job turns into a nightmare
This is Jeff Altman,,,,, Large game hunterToday’s video is actually about stabilizing and finding stable jobs. I want to start by conveying a story to you. Now, I have been a professional recruiter for more than 40 years. And I remember being quite a junior, like the second and third year I was in the search, saying to the candidate, “Hi, I have a great company that I want to meet you”.
Well, I’ll describe the environment in which this person will work. I was just doing it at that time, but that wasn’t the point of the story. So I described the technical environment, the hiring manager’s cleverness, and I was taught a lot. Then I continued, “This is a bank, if the bank starts firing, then it’s time for us all to leave the country.” Well, the bank is firing. I haven’t left this country yet, maybe you have, but – .
By the way, the bank’s name is the manufacturer Hanover Trust, which has long disappeared from the banking world in the United States. They were acquired under the name of another long-disappeared chemical bank. So, you know, in the pursuit of stability, I want to point out that companies are no longer stable. Things always change. After all, the Great Depression story about Fortune 500 included companies that made off-road vehicles, RCA, and other companies with antique technology.
No stability. All you can do is raise your head, not look down. Check out your field trends and see how to take advantage of current or pre-curve trends. This way, you are attractive to other companies. Because the reality is, if you have been in the company for the next 10 years, it is unlikely to happen. Statistically, you are a distortion. Then why? Frankly, for employers, you’re a one-off.
I hope this is different, but this behavior tells me that those who make promises to you often disappear when the promises need to be kept. Promotional opportunities and wage increases? Trivial. You have moved from a first-stage drone to a second-stage drone, all the way to a drone 4, who cares? What matters is your personal sales ability. If you are able to adhere to your own time techniques, if you are willing to stay on trends in that era, rather than a victim of laziness or financial inertia to your employer, they are trying to convince you that, in general, no one is caring about the job that is so great, then you will be here to learn the opposite day.
So what I want to tell you is, stop looking for stability within the organization or within the next company. The only stability you can create, as millions of people learned in the last recession, is your skills, knowledge, and network. Get again: your skills, knowledge and network.
