Mateo’s gorgeous cover-up carpet complements the public roof of Dakar’s cultural center – Huge

On the roof of Trames, the arts and culture center in Dakar, Senegal, Mateo’s vibrant new installation creates a warm atmosphere above the hustle and bustle of the city. The artist uses paint and molds to become familiar with familiar patterns in Senegalese culture such as traditional wrestling, bird traces, fish and wax fabrics.
Mateo was also inspired Teraanga, A word in Wolov translates loosely into “hospitable” but is also characterized by a more comprehensive philosophy of generosity and acceptance. Teraanga has shaped the openness and communication of communities for hundreds of years and has been an integral aspect of Senegal’s lifestyle today.
Mateo was invited to live in Trames, where he initially planned to paint murals. But he was inspired by the public roof space in the center and conceived, rather than a large patterned carpet that evokes the spirit of Teraanga and celebrates Senegalese culture.
“Instead of painting the walls, I chose to work on the roof terrace, a vibrant space for gatherings, celebrations and dance ceremonies,” the artist said. He added that painting directly on the carpet on the carpet, adding: “A symbolic, open-air connection and ritual space.”
