Excerpted from Archives (2014), this is a simulated broadcast without BS job seeking advice broadcast
In this show, Jeff Altman, the big game Hunter, talks about some of the things you should do when you’re already working.
Note: I will no longer recruit. I am a coach who can help people become more effective in their careers. This can be more successful in job hunting, hiring, managing and leading more effectively, and more. Any work mentioned in the show was done a few years ago. I don’t know if any of the advertisers mentioned are still open.
Good morning, it was Jeff Altman, the big hunter. It’s Monday morning at 9am Eastern, which translates into a good, healthy BS-free job search advice. This is a time when I like to spend about 15 minutes talking to you about some of the elements of the job, because for me, it doesn’t have to be difficult, difficult, painful, or even that long.
The mistake that so many people make is to think that if they can do the job, it’s enough to find a job and be hired for it, when in reality, there is a range of extra skills that complement the abilities that hunters who really need most jobs will never develop and will take them too long to find a job. So, that’s where this show comes from. Now, for the most part, I spend my show talking to people who are out of work or who are actively looking for a job. But sometimes, you are considering changing jobs, or you are happy to do what you are doing. However, if you are considering improving the situation.
Then what can you do? As someone currently working and considering another option, what kind of things can you do to pursue this kind of job search? Now, the first thing to do is be clear about what you are looking for in your new location. Now, for me, it’s very important. After all, if you’re going to drive, I don’t know, Miami to Boston, and you don’t have a road map or GPS in your car, how do you know you’re on the right road? If you don’t have some version of the map or GPS to help you, how would you know you’re actually heading to Boston? Now, you might be able to say to yourself, OK, I figured it out as I keep moving forward.
Is this how you want to do a job search, find out it as you move forward, at least create goals for yourself? Now, in my opinion, a lot of recruiters or assholes suggest you think of a dream job. I don’t believe in having dreams. I think what you should start doing is to create parameters so you understand what the goal is.
You can then adjust to your identity and see what interests you have and what you are not. However, there are parameters to start to view. And from there, you need to do two things.
The first is to update your resume and cover letter. And second, update your LinkedIn configuration file. Before you update your LinkedIn profile, I want to remind you that you may be connecting to your boss or manager or some colleague who doesn’t want to warn you about something else.
Before updating the LinkedIn profile or tweaking it, turn off the privacy settings that alert all connections to the fact that you have updated your profile. Then after the configuration file update occurs, all you have to do is turn off the feature. So in the future, you can inform people of changes.
So, now, turn off the feature and update your resume. I use cover letter. That is indeed incorrect.
Consider the universal email you might send, where you can attach your resume to a resume that can be used as a baseline for all other cover emails you might send. So, doing this, you will have a basic resume that you can adjust because I don’t believe you ever sent a generic resume to a job. Even if the recruiter contacts you, even if you contact the company based on your LinkedIn profile, that universal resume will never be sent.
What you want to do is customize it to the character they describe to you. So, this way, you can best prove that you are suitable for the position. As for generic resumes, if you post it on a work board, pay for any features that might hide your name in the recipient.
This way, they will get some universal resumes without your name and contact information. It may have this encrypted email address. I know the monsters will do this.
I think most companies, most major working committees, do this. Thus, in this way, many employers use these working committees themselves to find candidates. Do you want them to find your resume? I don’t think so.
You can even pay for the service if you want. Continue to pay for this. Don’t be cheap.
The result is that you are hiding your identity on your current employer, but you can submit your resume to the organization. Another thing I think is very important, don’t use your office computer or office phone to seek a job. Now, if you’re using a computer, I’m just simply saying never use one of the jobs because the employer sets it as a trigger to let people know that. . . Let management know that someone is looking for a job.
So, for example, some organizations might block my domain name, or to let them know that someone is communicating with me. If you are using an office phone, remember that your smartphone belongs to your employer. Use your personal smartphone for all communication.
Don’t go through an Office server where the same problem may occur. So, next, consider taking a little time. One day.
I don’t care whether it’s a weekend or a weekday. Start thinking about starting the process of networking and networking in person. Look, it’s important for me to consider doing information interviews, reaching out to people you know and don’t know, buying them some coffee, picking up your brain and starting to seek some advice, especially in information interviews.
Talk to them about your changes you are considering. You are looking for some advice on how your field will develop and want to meet them for coffee or a quick lunch and pick what they prepare for the next phase of their work for what they might be doing, and what they might encourage you to improve your skills as you are considering making changes and are looking for input. Missing in your background will interfere with your career progress? So take a moment to do this.
Nowadays, many interviews are conducted, at least the initial ones. So, you want to think about when the call comes, do you want it to enter your desk phone, or do you want it to enter your phone? Do a mobile phone, do a mobile phone. When it comes to cell phones, you need to practice leisure when calling in.
So you might just say to the caller that you might be sharing space with others, or they might contact you during the meeting. You want to make sure you have a conversation at an inappropriate place or time, or you want to sound particularly nervous when you are talking. So, practice just says, this is not a good time for me.
Do you mind we’re scheduling later today? So, that way, you can be prepared and leave that public space, not just step out of the meeting room or take the elevator out during a call. Not long ago, someone forwarded my resume to me. They are entering the elevator red loss connection.
Why? Because the elevator does not have signals, the conversation cannot continue. Jeff said if I called you back in about five to ten minutes, would he have better grasped him? I just think of a place where I can speak freely. Then get to the place where he knew there was a good unit signal and gave me back from there.
Finally, this is another reminder before that you may be connecting with people via social media, and you don’t want to trigger or remind you of the fact that you are changing jobs. One thing to do is not talk about your job search online. Remember that the colleagues you think you think of your buds may also be someone who is fighting for your job or want to know by letting them know you are looking for a job, or maybe they are someone who meets two of your managers.
So, don’t talk about social media, but discuss how you search through social media. After all, it is important to change jobs regularly. After all, the way the system is set up, if you stay in one organization for a long time, the trend that the organization has is to take you for granted, without increasing compensation to attract people. . . Do not increase your salary by more than a few smaller points. . . Bring the characters you want from the outside because they have done it before.
You’d better move forward in your career and look for a job while you’re working.
