GPT-5 has been released, early reviews have appeared, and they are not good.
Many Chatgpt fans have brought Reddit and other social media platforms to the latest OpenAI Foundation model released Thursday to express their frustration and disappointment.
A quick glimpse of Chatgpt Subreddit (not related to Openai) shows a stern comment on the GPT-5. Since the model began rolling out, Subreddit has filled out posts calling GPT-5 a “disaster”, “terrible” and “even paid users, “the biggest junk.”
Embarrassingly, Altman and the rest of the OpenAI team are expected to perform Reddit AMA at 2:00 pm ET, and they will answer questions about the GPT-5. These questions have piled up in Q&A. Many users require OpenAI to bring back GPT-4O as an alternative to GPT-5.

Redditors’ evaluation of GPT-5
In many negative impressions, GPT-5 lacks the “personality” of GPT-4O, citing colder, shorter replies. “GPT-4O has this…warm. It’s witty, creative and surprisingly personal, like talking to someone who gets you. It doesn’t just spit out the answer; it feels like listening.” “Now? Everything is so… sterile.”
Another said: “GPT-5 lacks the nature and soul that separates Chatgpt (SIC) from other AI robots. I sincerely hope they bring 4O back as a legacy model or something like that.”
Mixable light speed
Several Redditors also criticized the fact that Openai canceled the option to choose different models, prompting some users to say they are unsubscribe. “I woke up this morning and found that Openai deleted 8 models overnight. No warning. No selection. No “old style options” one Redditor posted a Redditor who said they deleted their Chatgpt Plus account. Another user posted that they canceled the account for the same reason.
As Mashable reported yesterday, GPT-5 integrates various OpenAI models into a single platform, and Chatgpt will now select the appropriate model based on user prompts. Apparently, some users missed the old system and model.
Ironically, Openai also drew criticism Too many Model Options; GPT-5 should solve this confusion by simplifying previous models under GPT-5.
The expectations of GPT-5 cannot be higher – this may be the real problem with GPT-5.
Gary Marcus, a cognitive scientist and writer, is known for his research on neuroscience and artificial intelligence and a well-known skeptic of the AI Hype machine, wrote on his alternative that the GPT-5 has made “good progress” in many ways, but disappointing. Marcus noted that even after billions of dollars in investment, “GPT-5 is not a huge leap that people have long expected.”
Openai’s last release of the boundary model was released with GPT-4 two years ago. Since then, competitors like Google Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude, Xai’s Grok, Meta’s Llama and DeepSeek R1 have caught up with OpenAI with benchmarks, similar proxy features and user loyalty. For many, GPT-5 has the ability to strengthen or overthrow Openai’s dominance as an AI leader.
With this in mind, it inevitably disappoints some users, and many ChatGpt users have also shared positive reviews of the GPT-5. Time may be subject to these criticisms as Openai improves and adjusts the GPT-5. Historically, the company has also responded to user feedback, and Altman is very active in X.
“We currently believe that the best way to successfully drive the AI deployment challenges is a tight feedback loop of fast learning and careful iteration,” the company’s mission statement declares.
