Large game hunter Jeff Altman discusses effective strategies to implement when job opportunities are received.
Hello! I’m Jeff Altman, a big hunter, and today let’s talk about simple salary negotiation strategies. It should be obvious to you, but for many people, it is not. So let’s get started.
Now, you are in the middle of negotiations. Perhaps HR has expanded the offer. Maybe the hiring manager has it.
Let’s work here with the assumptions of HR. Therefore, human resources are often quite rigid and rules-oriented. For example, one of my clients said that as long as the person is within the same level of work, we have the right to increase our salary by a percentage.
Take this as an example, suppose you are an accountant. You will become an accountant. You won’t be a controller.
You will do the same accounting work for their organization as yours. What they are going to do is increase your salary by a fixed percentage. Now, assume that the salary is too low for you.
Now, what are you doing? Human resources do not necessarily have the influence to make money immediately. Your strategy is to form an allies, which is usually a hiring manager, and say to them, look, I really want to join. Excellent opportunity.
I would love to work with you, but your HR organization has expanded a too low offer for me. What’s acceptable? He or she will respond. You’ll give them a higher number.
They would say, let me see what I can do. Often, an offer is made for the hiring manager interest because it is practical for it, if they have to go back down the hole from the beginning and interview again to find another first option, then they will waste a lot of time, so money so that you can accept the offer or have someone fill the job, I should say. So here you are looking for allies of hiring managers who might say, look, my hands are tied.
I can’t do that, but you’ve chosen information about the amount of influence that person has inside the company because they don’t have the chance to add a few thousand dollars to the offer. HR is so budget-controlled that they can’t get you on board. Again, I won’t tell you what to do here, but you’ve learned a little about their company and you want to take that into account when considering an offer.
Now, let’s do it the opposite. The number of hiring managers is low. Now, let’s take a look at HR and as an ally, say I really want to join.
He or she looks like a great manager. The work would be great. The quote is just a low point.
Can you increase your offer or increase your offer and offer alternative salary? They may say yes or no. They may talk about their own interests and how good they are. All in all, you are learning something, but the strategy here is allies.
Seek help to those who don’t have an extension offer and become your advocate for increasing your money. This is Jeff Altman. Hope you found this video helpful.
