There are some important lessons that people can learn and use from Tom Brady’s career.

I thought I would do a weird little video career perspective from Tom Brady. If you don’t recognize the name, you’re obviously not a football fan.
Tom Brady has been a quarterback for the New England Patriots and it feels like 100 years. I believe he has been in his 16 seasons. Over the years, he has been 41 years old. He is the Super Bowl quarterback. That has never happened before. And, you know, you look at someone during your career and start asking yourself, “What makes them successful, what makes them effective?”
Now, let’s start. . . Most businesses are a team sport, and of course so is football. It is a football team that he is committed to excellence and an effective system that he has grown over time.
In addition, there is a self-regulating environment, which is self-policing. And don’t get me wrong. The coaching staff is huge. They teach; they demand excellence. The organization did not withdraw. And, when you look at the organization, how does this match? Whether there is a commitment to excellence, or a commitment to achieve it with enough effort. You have to be aware of this because when you look at your career, the measure of success is measured by your impact.
Brady certainly had a huge impact on football games. Same as the entire team. So part of his success comes from the organization. But pull him out of the system and pretend he is not a contribution to it, because he is. To illustrate this, I think his efforts and motivation for success and improvement.
Because it was a late draft pick, he made the team work to succeed. His first Super Bowl was a game, and his team didn’t expect to win, they won! They played a very firm defensive game and Brady did enough to win, and in fact, in all these Super Bowls (I think there are 10 games now, or some crazy numbers), you know, from this point of view, it’s a team that won those games. So, that’s not to say they are talented (they are), and talented, not opponents. But they made them work, they became smart, and they did a lot of things effectively.
Brady is a guy who works hard to improve, and, that’s one of the other factors I think there is, he takes care of himself. You look at him physically, he’s in the weight room, he’s eating a certain diet, how many of you (and that’s the same for me) get fat, stupid and happy.
So I mentioned the weight thing, because weight is a way we slow ourselves down, we become more unconscious and our efforts start to decrease. As he gets older (he is 41, I document that), it’s a man who desires success. So, observe yourself again and notice if your abilities are decreasing. Whether you are spending more time, whether you are spending time and time, or trying to become a champion, or doing enough time. Now, I know that at some point in life you can do less because you have young kids and you may not have the wealth Brady has or the ability to hire people to serve you. But, where you can, look for ways to find time to take care of yourself.
The last thing I want to come up with is the team owning spells – your job! What I translated in my mind is to improve consistency in your work. Day after day, you do the work you need. No shortcuts. No ease. No coast. You grind it.
That’s what this team really does-it figures out. They did a great job, without any shortcuts. So, this is my encouragement to you – do small things. Take good care of yourself. Working in an organization dedicated to successful work will make small things effective and this will affect your career.
Then why should I hire you?
