Ralph Rugoff leaves Hayward Gallery in London after 20 years

Ralph Rugoff, curator of the 2019 Venice Biennale, will leave him as a director of Hayward Gallery after leading the London agency for 20 years.
South Bank Center, which runs Hayward Gallery, said Rugoff will leave the museum next spring. It announced its departure that he will continue to serve as an independent curator and writer.
Rugoff is the most famous internationally for its 2019 Biennale, which includes 79 artists (the world’s largest art festival has relatively few numbers), each performing at least two works in two different locations. The conceited conception responded to the polarized political atmosphere, but the exhibition responded differently. exist ArtnewsAndrew Russeth wrote, the exhibition is “strangely unbalanced”, although it contains many “surprising visual moments.”
In London, Rugoff has been known since 2006 for directing the Hayward Gallery. During that time, the agency staged acclaimed shows such as “Kiss My Gender!”, a 2019 survey on how artists compete with gender mobility in their works and the gender mobility of Kader Attia and Tracey Emin.
The institution’s wealthy show won praise for Rugoff, who was appointed an official in the Order of the British Empire in 2019. He also participated in the 2010 British Pavilion Selection Committee and the jury of the 2013 Turner Award at the Venice Biennale.
Before joining Hayward Gallery in 2006, American-born curator led the Wattis Institute
Contemporary art is a San Francisco art space known for its experimental exhibitions.
“Over the past two decades, it has been very helpful to exhibit, commission and publish some of the world’s most compelling artists; to get truly inspiring art customers, philanthropists and collectors; and to work with great museums and art organizations around the world,” Rugoff said in a statement. “I believe Hayward’s plan has made a positive contribution to the era of great change in the contemporary art landscape. I am very much looking forward to watching the next chapter unfold.”
