Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, offers simple advice to write a great resume using this hack.

From salary to purpose

When most people write resumes, they write out their main resume, then trim out everything related to it, and then mail the same resume to every job they apply to. Just like the right watch twice a day, it sometimes works, but hardly enough time.

This is the solution to the problem. It requires you to take the time to think about everything you do professionally.

What I want to do is write this master resume. It has everything you do – roles, responsibilities, achievements, if you are in it, the technology you use. It also includes the income generated from your resume savings on your job and/or job.

Once you have that master, everything I care about may be 10 pages long, but for you, starting with the latest work, working backwards, and then creating this master document, is the most important thing for you.

Then when you apply to things, when you submit your resume to your friends about opportunities, I want you to trim things that don’t matter and get people’s attention to the main things that are related to that particular job.

When you are redundant, fired, fired, RIF

Some of you will say, “Oh! This sounds like a lot of work!” In fact, it’s not a lot of work. There is much more editing than you do with your master document each time you trim something that works for your employer.

After all, when you buy a personal computer (if you still buy it), introducing plug-in technology is a big deal. What is that? All devices can be plugged into any computer, and you can create something customized to your individual buyer’s needs.

If the manufacturer decides everything you need, you will get a lot of unnecessary things and lots of unnecessary costs in the equipment. By creating plugs, you can get a custom system based on your unique needs.

The same goes for resumes. You need to provide customized products for every job that applies to you. If you think this is a lot of work. Let me ask you a question. From your point of view, it’s a lot of work. To do this, “Adventure” gets a $15,000 or $20,000 raise or $25,000, or add $50,000 or $75,000 to your veteran? I don’t think so. When everything is said, it’s no big deal.

Write to the master. Create this huge document. Get people’s attention to every bit of material you do. Then, each time a resume is submitted, the relevant section of each employer pulls it into a separate resume and submits it to the company. That’s what you have to do. This is the easiest hack I can give you resume writing because until this doesn’t work, what are you doing, are you?

Try my way. It does work.
