Through the luminous work, Raúlde Nieves transforms the hall into a bold shelter – Huge

In a huge new installation, Raúl De Nieves brings Catholic images, Mexican folklore and tarot cards into a dazzling field of view. To “according to innocence”, the main hall of the Pioneer Factory was transformed into a vibrant shelter with 50 stained glass-like panels that stretched towards heaven. Install individual debris in the windows of the space, with larger light box murals from below.

De Nieves is known for utilizing common materials including wood, glue, tape, and for this project, the color is acetate, which allows light to filter into the open lobby. In addition to swapping plastic for glass, the artist subverted the typical cathedral environment with non-religious images and printed panels. These include the skeleton of riding – a symbol of transformation in the tarot card, as well as bold phrases such as “happiness runs in a circular motion” and “sometimes like the weapon they tangle.”

This hybrid of spiritual references creates a passionate environment that can be reflected and connected across belief systems. “‘Given Innocence’ invites viewers to embrace change is not a loss, but as an update, which is a passage leading to deeper insight and inner strength,” a statement said.

The immersive project marks De Nieves’ first institutional exhibition in New York City and will last until December 14. Find more artists’ work on Instagram.
