French auction house Lucien Paris is currently enjoying a Pablo Picasso painting that the public has not seen in 80 years. The work was painted in 1943 by the artist lover, muse and an artist Dora Maar, and was purchased by a private collector in August 1944.
Before that, the title was Half body of a woman wearing a flower hat (Dora Mar)only exhibited a few times outside Picasso’s studio. The anonymous current seller inherited the painting from his grandparents. The photographic evidence for this painting is found in Brassaï’s 1944 photographs, which were piled up in Picasso’s studio and published a catalog of the sale in the auction house’s catalogue.
Lucien listed the painting, estimated to be around $9.5 million. guardian. This is the artist’s current auction record, 2015 paintings in Christie’s New York for 1955 Les Femmes d’Alger (version ‘o’). It was reportedly sold to the Royal Tani family of Qatar.
