Lisa Phillips, long-time director of the New Museum in New York, retires
Lisa Phillips, director of the new museum in New York, will retire in the Post for more than 25 years. New York Times Report Thursday.
The museum is currently undergoing a 62,000-square-foot expansion and is expected to open this fall, although inauguration dates have not been announced. It was the second largest expansion for Phillips, 71, since taking office as director in 1999.

During his tenure, the new museum conducted extensive investigations and reviews, including Wangechi Mutu, Pipilotti Rist, Rosemarie Trockel, Carroll Dunham, Chris Burden and Peter Saul. The museum also staged a series of influential groups, including 2007’s “Non-Monthly: Objects of the 21st Century”, focusing on the ever-changing sculptures, and 2011’s “Ostalgia,” about art under the Soviet bloc.

However, her leadership is not without controversy. In 2010, the museum drew criticism for introducing works owned by trustee Dakis Jouannou. Phillips also faces criticism from staff who say her salary (currently about $900,000) is too high, according to the museum’s recent tax documents.
Around the 2019 New Museum Workers Alliance, staff claimed management tried to prevent the group from being formed. Reflecting on that period, Phillips told era This week, “At first, I felt that it was against the culture of the museum. But then I started to see that this is a new generation of speeches and we need to listen.”
Phillips highlights her role in expanding the museum physically and financially. She oversaw the relocation to Bowery in 2007, greatly expanding its footprint. She also added the incubator’s new company to its programming and brought the rhizome (art and technical organization) under the museum’s Aegis.
She was a curator of the Whitney Museum before she was in charge of the new museum in 1999. She is the agency’s second director after founder Marcia Tucker.
Phillips is the second major museum director to announce her departure in recent years. Glenn Lowry of the Museum of Modern Art announced last year that he would resign soon, and Christophe Cherix will lead the institution.
According to the museum, the new museum will soon launch her successor as it is committed to a plan to increase its donation by $50 million by 2027. era.
