Yesterday was a difficult day. It was both my wife’s birthday and the day Hurricane Helen hit Asheville, North Carolina. I’ve shared an article in the feed and I’ll share it here too.

A year ago, on September 27, 2024, I woke up early. After a few days of rain, it was clear (very) early in the morning. My wife came home from a resort in Arizona and was with me. The day before, I picked her up at the airport, and there were stalled trucks on the highway and the road was flooded.

At around 11 a.m., the storm began and gradually got worse. Later that day, electricity was lowered, and if the trees fell down and the power lines were down, this could have happened in Asheville. We watched the water pouring out around our home. My wife said, “Look!” It was a rapid influx of water that had never been seen on the fence line.

We had an electric stove so we couldn’t cook and the new propane grill was supposed to arrive that day, but delivery was cancelled. Dinner is something in the refrigerator. After all, if the power is broken for any length of time.

The next day, we ventured to see the consequences of the storm. The power supply is still off. No internet. I have a gas filled with air tanks so we could drive to see if any shops open locally. No. We drove west and met some people in the town 15 miles away who told us that the supermarket was open, but only took the cash. I looked at my wallet. $50. I’ve filled the car but haven’t thought about cash. mistake.

In the store’s parking lot is a horror show, an appetizer of horror inside – lines on the register entangled along the back of the store. Imagine you are in one box, Costco’s production line is heading back to another aisle. You have $50 and you have to buy the jar because at least your can opener is manual.

The town was powerless for weeks. We do not have any kind of water through the pipe for 54 days. We will bring multiple 3-calorie cans to fill the spots and drag them home to be able to drink water.

We survived hell. I know a lot of people who die in the storm. He and his dog were swept over and drove to the roof of the house on a 30-foot-high wall of water. That’s three-story water. People help each other. A year later, the recovery is still underway. For many, they are rougher than my wife and I.

I share this because many of you, many of you, many of you loved, many of you who you helped at work, or many of you who worked with you in the past, need help.

Services can help in some ways, but they also need you.

Open your network.

Point them to someone you know who doesn’t know who can help them.

If you receive a message from someone, please reply. Don’t be a ghost. The people you know need your help, just like my town a year ago.

You are lucky to be at work. You may need another person’s help in the future.

If you want to connect with me and access my LinkedIn network, please contact me and say in your message Asheville requires a connection. And if you do that and then try to sell me something, I will stop you immediately, so don’t waste your time.
