Slim Margarita – Slim Kitchen

Skinny margarita is made with just four simple ingredients and it’s refreshing, bright and just what you’re looking for at the balanced Margarita Hotel in Margarita Island.
Margarita is a healthier, lower-calorie alternative to those bright green margaritas made with pre-made margarita mixtures. Plus, you can customize interesting flavors, more or less sweetness or unique decorations!
Making margarita at home is my specialty and I’m always looking for ways to make my favorite restaurant version healthier.
These lean margaritas are made with large pitchers of fresh juice, tequila and tequila syrup. I added equal lime juice and orange juice to give it a vibrant flavor and seltzer to make the drink bigger, which is always a plus! Making healthier margarita at home has never been that easy.

What is the best tequila for Slim Margarita?
The best tequila for margarita is clean, crisp and unnamed stuff like Blanco (Silver) Tequila. It allows the taste of lime and orange juice to shine without being overdoing it! I always recommend 100% agave for the best flavor and texture. Espolòn, Olmeca Altos, El Jimador and Cazadores will not break the bank.
Can I use three seconds instead of orange juice?
Yes! I don’t like orange wine, I prefer the flavor of fresh orange juice, but you can definitely change the juice in three seconds.
Recipe ideas and margarita flavor ideas
Once you start thinking about margarita, you may start thinking about all the different flavor combinations you want to try.
- fruit: These can be easily converted into fruit flavored margaritas using strawberries, raspberries, mangoes, pineapple, peaches, watermelons, etc. For a quick, rustic preparation, just mix the fruit on the bottom of the shaker before adding other ingredients. For a smoother option, fuse the fruit into the puree and add it to the shaker.
- Lime flavor: If you prefer a lime-centric margarita, use a little less orange juice, about two tablespoons.
- Spicy: For spicy margarita, bond a few slices of jalapeno to the bottom of the shaker before adding other ingredients. Then garnish with a few extra pieces of sliced jalapeño.
- Fresh herbs: Adding some fresh herbs to the margarita may be really delicious. Consider rosemary, thyme, coriander or basil. Simply mix the fresh herbs with the lime juice in the vibrator. Then add other ingredients and shake. Garpet with extra fresh herbs.
- freezing: To turn it into frozen margarita, just mix it with some ice – about 1/4 cup per serving to make sure it won’t be watered.
- Frozen fruit: To get the best frozen fruit margarita unwatered, just mix the margarita recipe below with 1/2 cup frozen fruit in the blender (per serving). This works best when you prepare several servings at a time.
- Spice-filled rims: There are many different ways to cover the edges of Margarita Island to create interesting flavor combinations. Our favorite is using the jalapeno lime seasoning Tajin. You can also use the Chili Lemon Seasoning by Trader Joe. Another option is to make your own seasoned salt edge by adding citrus peels, hay or other spices to the salt edge.
How do you make a pitcher for a thin margarita?
Once you start making these lighter margaritas, you will need to batch make them for a fun taco night or party. This recipe will be about 8 drinks.
- 1.5 cups of tequila
- 8 large limes, juice (about 1.5 cups)
- 4 oranges, juice (about 1.5 cups)
- 2.5 tablespoons agave tequila
Since you can’t really stir the drink with your pitcher, I want to mix it ahead of time if you have time to cool in the refrigerator. This way, the ice will not be watered. Then just set up salted glasses, add ice and you’re ready to go.
If you serve them with Seltzer water, add them or place them on the side of the person who wants to use it before eating.
Can I do these in advance?
If you plan to make these for the crowd, you can mix lime juice, orange juice, tequila and tequila together, up to 4 hours in advance, and then cool in the refrigerator. Then stir well before serving.
If you plan to make it a few days in advance, you can mix lime juice, orange juice and agave. Then, when ready to serve, add tequila and shake or stir.
If you want to add Seltzer water, add it immediately before serving to make it nice and bubble.
Why add water?
Seltzer is not a traditional ingredient in margarita, but as someone who appreciates the bigger drink, I like to add some lime, lemon or grapefruit flavor to my margarita. Not only does it double the size of the drink, it also adds some delicious bubbles.
If you decide to add bubbles to your drink, you can start up smaller and add splashes, or some people prefer to use tall glasses and fill them with Seltzer. You can always squeeze in extra lime if you want.
A quick note: If you add Seltzer, especially in large quantities, it will dilute the other flavors of the drink, so it won’t taste like a standard margarita.
What can I use instead of agave?
Since tequila is made with tequila, I like to supplement this flavor by using tequila as a sweetener. However, you can also use honey, maple syrup, or simple syrup.
