Earn bonus miles: Sign up now for United’s latest Mile Play promotion

United Airlines has launched a new Mile Play promotion that rewards target members with bonus miles after completing specific tasks. Now is a good time to check your eligibility and register – even if you’re unsure about your upcoming travel plans.

To find out if you’re eligible and to sign up, visit United’s Mile Play page. Enter your United MileagePlus number, check the box to say you’re not a robot, and click “Start Mile Play.”

As is normal with these promotions, the offers vary widely from member to member. United may not have Mile Play available for some members, while others will see different rewards and requirements to earn them. We checked the TPG team and found different quotes.

United Airlines Mile Play Offer Examples

Senior travel editor Lyndsey Matthews does not hold a MileagePlus membership, but he received an offer to earn 2,800 bonus miles by booking and taking two trips before Dec. 22; each fare must be more than $300.

Summer Hull, senior director of content, has a United Premier Gold membership, which allows her to earn 9,000 bonus miles if she takes five trips of $100 or more.

TPG writer Rachel Craft is undocumented but received an offer to book and take two trips by Dec. 22 to earn 7,200 miles; each fare must be over $175.

TPG Travel Director Eric Rosen received an offer to earn 3,000 miles after booking and completing a trip; the fare must be $100 or more.

Lead writer Katie Genter, who has United Silver status as a Marriott Titanium Elite member, received an offer to earn 14,000 miles by booking before Dec. 22 and taking two trips; each fare must be over $225.

  • Complete two trips before December 22 to earn 4,600 miles; each fare must exceed $225.
  • Earn 6,000 miles by completing a trip by December 22; ticket must be over $200.

Keep in mind that to be counted towards these promotions, you generally have to book and fly after signing up but before the promotion end date (December 22nd). Therefore, if you have already planned a trip during the Mile Play window, that trip is not eligible (although you may consider canceling and rebooking). Unless otherwise stated in the offer terms, only paid flights marketed and operated by United and United Express will count toward the Mile Play offer.

The best cards to book United flights

Whether you’re targeted for this promotion or not, you can earn tons of United bonus miles by opening a co-branded credit card. Here are some of the current welcome bonuses for United cards:

  • United℠Discover Card (See rates and fees): Earn 60,000 bonus miles when you spend $3,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening.
  • United Quest℠ Card (See Rates & Fees): Earn 70,000 bonus miles and 1,000 Premier qualifying points when you spend $4,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening.
  • United Club℠ Card (See Rates & Fees): Earn 80,000 bonus miles when you spend $5,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening.

  • United℠ business card (See Rates & Fees): Earn 100,000 bonus miles and 2,000 PQP when you spend $5,000 in purchases within the first three months of account opening.

While co-branded credit cards can help you earn United miles, you may earn even more rewards when you book with one of the best cards for buying flights. For example, American Express Platinum Card® Earn 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel® (1 point per dollar on purchases up to $500,000 per calendar year).

bottom line

Even if you don’t have any United travel planned anytime soon, it’s worth signing up and considering whether it’s time to plan a trip. If you booked any fully refundable flights with United or another airline, you should consider whether your Mile Play offer is enough to allow you to cancel and rebook with United.
