Education and Jobs

you are wasting my time

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

In this video, big game hunter Jeff Altman adopts the voice of Jeff Foxworthy of “You Might Be a Redneck” fame to talk about how job seekers can waste hiring managers and recruiters’ time.

Overcoming barriers to finding a job after age 50

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter. Even more so today. . . This is a wrong video. That said, this is a mistake people make.

I wrote an article for LinkedIn called “You’re Wasting My Time.” You know, very popular, over 600 views in a few hours. So, I decided what I was going to do was educate you on the mistakes that the people I reviewed were making.

Ready? Now, as I write this, I say, imagine this like what Jeff Foxworthy would do. You may have a redneck theme. So, I got to voice Jeff Foxworthy.

I apologize in advance to Jeff Foxworthy. If you don’t like the sound, just pretend it’s my normal voice. Ready? If you’re applying for a position that requires IT security experience and your only security experience is at the front door of a nightclub, you’re wasting my time.

If you own a laundromat and apply for the position of Director of Human Resources at a $750 million company, you’re wasting my time. If you’re applying for a Java developer position and you don’t have that word in your resume, you’re wasting my time. Let me switch the camera a little bit so I can scroll.

If you are a third-party recruiter and submit your resume to me in compliance with the requirements prohibiting third-party recruiters, you are wasting my time. If you live in Pakistan and apply for a position without an overseas resume, you are wasting my time. If your last job was in 2008 and you haven’t provided information about what you’ve been doing since Barack Obama became president, you’re wasting my time.

This is one of my favorites. If you apply for a Rails developer position and your only qualification is that your name is Ruby, you’re wasting my time. If you’re applying for a position where these critical skills are in the title and you don’t have them, you’re wasting my time.

The “So What” Test for Every Resume Point

Do you see the point? There are a lot of things people do to recruiters and hiring managers. Think about it from their perspective. What they’re looking for, what I’m looking for, is someone who seems to roughly fit what I’m looking for here.

So, be polite. As I pointed out here, if you submit a resume four times for the same job in 10 minutes, you’re wasting people’s time, and I don’t have an accent. This is again one of the funniest things.

If you apply for an IT delivery manager job and your only qualification is delivering Chinese food on a bicycle, you’re wasting my time. This is something we as recruiters, hiring managers, and companies have to deal with. A little more than Viagra or Cialis spamming us all day long.

The email list in the article is one I’ve received in the past 36 hours, understanding the portion of the time I wasn’t working or sleeping. So, when all is said and done, make it simple. Make it easy for readers to see if you’re a good fit.

If you’re not a good fit, don’t send your resume out there, wish, hope, think, pray and spam. This is Jeff Altman. Hope you find this video helpful.

I would also like to say that if your current company is hiring, please send me an email at the address below. Let me know who to contact and if I should mention your name. I would be happy to assist with staffing positions at your company.
