“Metamorphosis” by artist popodoodle

A series of doodles by Japanese-American artist popodoodle. Popodoodle’s illustrations are rooted in comics and a fascination with the natural world, focusing on transformation and growth. Although “Metamorphosis” began as a series of “silly doodles,” it reflects an ongoing exploration of and concern for the quiet evolution of nature.
“Just a frowning tadpole slowly evolving into an increasingly alien creature. I didn’t intend for it to become more serious, but it kept going. What started as a lightheartedness turned into a complete commitment. I had to squeeze out every ounce of creativity to keep each new form fresh. I I made a rule for myself to avoid using direct references. Instead I relied on the way I remembered the animals, rather than what they actually looked like. Each stage became more about an imaginative journey of vision, one evolution at a time.”
popodoodle entered our Booooooom Art & Photography Book Awards 2025 and was shortlisted.
