Two Second Interview Technique (Video)

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Here, I discuss two second interview tips that will help you connect with the people you meet.

Common interview mistakes many executives make (and how to fix them)

I’m Jeff Altman, big game hunter. I’m the head coach at JobSearch.Community. I have two second interview tips that I think will help you stand out from the rest of the crowd and help build connections during the interview. Now, in previous videos, I’ve talked about how important it is to be consistent with what you said in your first interview.

That is, if you talk about something the first time, you want what you say to be consistent the second time, right? Otherwise, it leaves them scratching their heads, wondering, is anyone still telling the truth? But here’s a little trick. That said, you always want them to think of you as part of the team. You always want them to think of you as one of the people.

So let’s say you come back for an interview and you’re meeting with someone you’ve already spoken to. Maybe it was a phone interview. Maybe yes. . . Before you meet the next group of people who happen to be part of the setup.

So, when you talk to them this time, this is what you say. Now, I’m thinking about our last conversation. You also talked about this and that.

I’m very excited about this. This question has been on my mind since we last spoke. I’m wondering, can you tell me more about this and how I can contribute to this? . . Again, you’re just talking. . . You try to get them to talk more.

Because if you’ve watched another video of mine called Headhunters Know Your Secrets to Awesome Interviews , you’ll find that the more they talk, the more they like you. It’s like you make them brilliant and you just bask in their splendor and listen religiously to what they have to say. So, always let them talk and say, you know, I’m thinking about the last conversation we had.

38 Deadly Interview Mistakes to Avoid

I’ve been thinking about this ever since. My mind really hasn’t stopped thinking about this. Can you tell me more about it? Because that’s really exciting for me.

So, here’s a little trick to get them talking. Another thing I want to bring to your attention today is references to other people’s conversations. So, let’s say you’re talking to John, Phil, Brenda, whoever it is in your first conversation.

There is a point that sticks in your mind again. So, you’re meeting a new friend. You said, you know, I was talking to Brenda last time.

Brenda was talking about one thing or another. This is really interesting to me. Can you tell me what you think about this? In fact, do you think so too? Because it’s really, really exciting.

The idea becomes, by citing people you’ve talked to before, you can tell if they’re consistent, right? Because, for example, if you’re talking to a subordinate and now you’re talking to a general manager, a director, a vice president or whoever, you’re going to get their perspective on the role. The idea is always to try to reference something from previous conversations. Now, from your perspective, the key is that what you quote needs to be accurate.

You can’t make it up or they’ll be confused and reject you. But assuming you can get it right, then refer back to the conversation you had with Brenda, ask for their perspective, ask them to imagine the role you play, expand on that in a way that gives you an idea of whether they’re aligned with their ideas, because the last thing you want to do is get into a situation where there’s conflict around what your role is going to be and how they’re going to measure success.
