At times, you may feel frustrated while searching for a job. In today’s Daily Show, I discuss a simple strategy for managing the critical voice in your head.
rate yourself
I’m here to talk to you about how to manage your inner voice. You know, someone who says, “You’re not as good as you think you are. This is going to be hard. You suck.” You know, there’s a critical voice inside most of us, almost all of us… Maybe all of us have messages sent to us that we’re not as good as we think we are.
It may show up earlier in your job search; they may show ablation or job search. I just know it shows up. The part of you that doesn’t believe in yourself needs to be silenced.
You can have a friend you can talk to; you have a wife/husband/partner/pastor… you can talk to anyone about it, but ultimately the person you talk to about it most effectively is the person you calm your voice with. This voice is indeed the voice of your fear. It’s the fear that this won’t work out. It’s harder than you think; it takes longer, etc.
Let’s say you’re feeling stuck in your job search, and the person you were talking to yesterday was you. You can choose whether to attend social events. He talks to the boys and they basically tell you, “Well, you know, I’m not going to see anyone there; it’s going to be a big waste of time.” You know that voice? You said very calmly, “But I might need someone there. I might want to meet someone who could be helpful to me. It would also be nice to get out of the house and do something a little different, and also, when I go to that social event, I can connect with other people and split the trip into two Three different things. I appreciate your input, your voice, but, at the end of the day, I want to do this trip with your permission and give it a try, because you never know what might happen.”
Here’s an example of negotiating with The Voice. You could say something like, “My resume isn’t getting results.” Maybe you need to revise your resume or hire someone to revise your resume or do a resume review to get it done. Same as your LinkedIn profile. If people are contacting you through LinkedIn, there’s probably something seriously wrong with your profile because it’s not attracting recruiters who are relentlessly looking for talent.
Your voice isn’t of much use when looking for a job. You need to control it a little bit because sometimes it works well for you and helps you. However, most of the time, almost all of the time, the voice of fear is not helpful in the job search.
