Over 70 artists transform matchboxes for Joy Machine’s “General Strike” — Colossal

Joy Machine is pleased to launch general strikean exhibition of more than 70 matchboxes, opens November 21 in Chicago.
What does unity mean to artists? In other words, what can art do in times of crisis? The concept of a general strike appeals to many advocates and activists because it is one of the few options available to the public in the face of oppression or inequality. Sometimes considered a “people’s veto”, for those of us who are not unionized, a general strike is less about joining our colleagues on the picket lines than it is about a call for unity. They ask us to identify our strengths and determine how to best utilize our skills.
Writing about the need and dream of solidarity, activist and novelist Sarah Schulman describes recognition, risk, and creativity as essential tools for harnessing “the power of people needed to reach the critical mass of life-changing conditions and actually save lives under the most extreme brutal conditions.” For artists, these three principles—recognition, risk, and creativity—have often become the cornerstones of practice. A keen eye and keen observation, personal sacrifice and provocative stance, combined with a fertile imagination, are evident in the studio and on the street. Artists are in many ways world builders, helping to illuminate things that were previously ignored or thought impossible.
exist general strikewe witnessed more than 70 ways of approaching a single object: a large wooden matchbox. Containing purple-tipped matchsticks, these potential vessels showcase the variety of mediums and approaches offered by artists across North America. Some revel in whimsy, beauty, and joie de vivre, while others guide us to bold, decisive action. All of these express in their own way an inner urge to transform something simple into something else entirely.
Like any crisis, whether physical or conscience, it requires multiple responses, the best of which fan the flames of courage and ultimately assert our common humanity. The specificity of these methods and those that inspired their creation make this fight worthwhile, especially when we work together.
A portion of the proceeds from all works sold general strike Donations will be made to the ACLU. RSVP for the opening reception.
