Enjoy the full range of services for fewer points: 6 benefits when you fly with Virgin Atlantic for 6,000 points

Did you know you can fly to Europe in points for less than the cost of many domestic flights?

Virgin Atlantic offers savings rewards on economy one-way flights from the Northeastern United States to London (and select flights to Manchester, England) starting at just 6,000 Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points, plus taxes and surcharges.

With fewer points required, you can expect a minimal financial experience. Don’t worry, though, because Virgin Atlantic offers a full-service product, which makes it one of the best ways to cross the Atlantic for less, even with such low points rates.

Here are six benefits of booking Virgin Atlantic’s 6,000-point transatlantic flights, plus information on how to find and book these special fares.

You’ll get 6 items with a 6,000-point flight to London (or Manchester)

Virgin Atlantic offers three different economy fare types for cash bookings: Light, Classic and Delight. Light excludes checked baggage and seat selection (before check-in); Classic fares are comparable to Economy fares on other airlines; Delight offers premium check-in service, priority boarding and the ability to select a seat with more legroom.

When you book Economy Class on a Virgin Atlantic-operated flight through the Flying Club program to a Classic fare type, you get:

  • Free standard seat selection: Select a seat with up to 31 inches of pitch at no additional cost, as standard seat selection is included with award tickets departing from the U.S. at all times, including at the time of booking.
  • Baggage allowance: When redeeming across the Atlantic, you can bring one standard carry-on bag up to 22 pounds (and one small personal item under the seat), and one checked bag up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfort items for your seat: Have a pillow, blanket, and headphones handy, whether you’re snoozing after dinner or immersed in a new-release movie.
  • Seatback entertainment and charging: Each Economy Class seat has its own in-flight entertainment screen with over 300 hours of TV and movies. USB charging is also available at each seat; some aircraft are equipped with shared universal sockets.
  • Meals, snacks and drinks: Multiple meals, snacks and drinks (including alcoholic beverages, tea and coffee) are free, so you don’t have to buy them on the plane or pay for expensive airport meals.
  • Level points leading to elite status: The Flying Club program awards elite status tier points on award flights operated by Virgin Atlantic, helping you progress towards Silver or Gold membership, even if you don’t travel with cash tickets.

Please note that you currently cannot use points to book Virgin Atlantic Economy Light or Economy Premium.

How to find and book Virgin Atlantic Special Offers awards

Award redemption prices for the Flying Club program are dynamic, meaning they change based on demand; however, in Economy Class, you can take the following flights one-way on specific off-peak dates:

  • Earn 6,000 Virgin Points when flying to London Heathrow (LHR) from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C., and from JFK International Airport (JFK) to Manchester Airport (MAN)
  • Earn 7,500 Virgin Points when flying to LHR from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Miami International Airport (MIA), Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Tampa International Airport (TPA), MAN from ATL and MCO, and Edinburgh Airport (EDI) from MCO
  • Earn 9,000 Virgin Points when flying to LHR from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), and from LAS to MAN

To find these prices, first log into your Virgin Atlantic Flying Club account and find the Award Seat Checker tool in the right-hand menu.

Enter your departure and arrival airports and select your travel month. A calendar grid will appear with a red “Saver” label marking the lowest award.

These red tags indicate the lowest-priced award seats, so focus your search on them to earn the fewest Virgin Points.

Once you’ve found a red Saver-tagged date that works for you, click the red “Find My Award Seats” button in the lower right corner of the Award Seat Checker page, re-enter your search details, and continue checking available flights and required taxes, fees and surcharges.

Offer redemption is only available on Virgin Atlantic flights, so the Award Seat Checker will only show Virgin Atlantic flights.

What taxes, fees and surcharges are required?

Flying Club imposes taxes, fees and surcharges on special fares to and from the UK, and all flights originating from the UK (regardless of carrier or plan) are subject to UK Air Passenger Tax.

For a special round-trip economy fare between New York and London, Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club program charges $436.63 in taxes, fees and surcharges in addition to the required 12,000 Virgin Points.

Based on TPG’s November 2025 valuation of Virgin points at 1.3 cents each, those 12,000 Virgin points are worth $156. Add in $436.63 in taxes, fees and surcharges, and a round-trip Saver fare will cost you $592.63 in points and cash.

It’s worth comparing this to the cheapest return economy cash fare we found on the same route:

  • Lamp: $513.23
  • Classic: $713.23
  • Joy: $838.23

So if you don’t need to check a bag or select your seat in advance, you may want to consider light cash fares instead of Special Flying Club redemptions (if you can find them at that price), since you can also earn points by crediting cash fares to a Flying Club or partner program like Delta SkyMiles.

However, if you want to book a classic fare for the extras, and you can find special fares for as low as 6,000 Virgin Points one way, then this is a great way to redeem your Virgin Points and get much more than our estimate.

How do these fares compare to other program redemptions?

So you can choose the best deal for your next transatlantic flight, here’s a comparison of the starting prices for award redemptions from popular loyalty programs in round-trip economy (excluding basic economy) on the busy New York to London corridor (prices are the lowest at the time of writing):

program Cost in points and miles Taxes, fees and surcharges (round trip) TPG Currency Valuation (November 2025) Total cost (in points or miles) plus taxes, fees and surcharges
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (Flights operated by Virgin Atlantic) 12,000 Virgin Points $436.63 1.3 cents $592.63
Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (Delta-operated flights) 20,000 Virgin Points $636.63 1.3 cents $896.63
American Airlines AAdvantage (flights operated by American Airlines) 38,000 AAdvantage miles $227.13 1.65 cents $854.13
American Airlines AAdvantage (flights operated by British Airways) 45,000 AAdvantage miles $829.53 1.65 cents $1,572.03
Delta SkyMiles (Delta-operated flights) 38,000 SkyMiles $213 1.25 cents $688
Delta SkyMiles (flights operated by Virgin Atlantic) 38,000 SkyMiles $269 1.25 cents $744
United MileagePlus (flights operated by United Airlines) 51,700 MileagePlus miles $211.23 1.4 cents $935.03
British Airways Club (flights operated by British Airways) 50,000 Avios $131.37 1.4 cents $831.37
British Air Club (US operated flights) 41,500 Avios $513.44 1.4 cents $1,094.44 USD

Although you may see discounted redemption amounts through certain airline loyalty programs (such as limited-time sales), these awards may be booked into base economy.

Be aware of the limitations that base economy options can place on your travel experience, even if it means saving some points and miles.

How to earn Virgin Points

Flying Club partners with all major credit card rewards programs. So you can easily increase your Virgin Points balance if you have a rewards credit card that earns points or miles on the following programs:

Please note that Capital One miles will be transferred to Virgin Red and not directly to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. However, you can easily transfer your Virgin Red points to Flying Club by linking your Red account and Flying Club account, where the combined Virgin Red points balance will appear in both accounts.

In addition, Flying Club often offers transfer bonuses, making it possible to book reduced fares for less than 6,000 credit card points.

bottom line

If you can find the lowest deals, Virgin Atlantic’s 6,000-point flights to London (or Manchester) offer a full-service experience, including seat selection, baggage, meals, drinks and inflight entertainment, plus earn tier points towards Flying Club membership.

It’s a comfortable Economy Class experience across the Atlantic and a great opportunity to redeem Virgin Points.

Additionally, Virgin Points are easy to earn and these redemptions are better value than competing programs, even taking into account carrier-imposed surcharges and higher taxes associated with leaving the UK
