I know many of you think cover letters are a waste of time. For many people, it’s because you’re not using them in the right way.

How to Get More Interviews: Give Up the Goal

So if you’re sending a cover letter, I would treat it as the body of the email, not a separate attachment. They won’t open individual attachments. They will recognize the resume file without looking at the individual attachments. So the way to get people to read it is to make it the body of the email. So, if you’re sending a cover letter, all you have to do is say, “I’m forwarding my resume to you to apply for such-and-such a position that I saw in a fill-in-the-blank ad. Let me tell you how my background fits the position.” Then, on the left, you put your required skills and experience in the left-hand column. So enter the time you used the skill, performed the function and the most recent time. So all you have to do is match your background to show fit. If you haven’t used something, ignore it. If you are uploading your resume to an applicant tracking system or advertising on LinkedIn, and can only upload one file, make the cover letter page one of your resumes. I say that because if you do that, what happens is, that’s the first page of your resume and it has all the keywords, right? So, they’ll love seeing…
