Domestic life merges with blooming gardens in Sarah Ann Webber’s work – Colossal

Through a lush clump of flowers painted in watercolor and colored pencil, a woman tries to find her footing. The nude protagonist is entangled in vines and leaves and can be seen holding a child or attending to another task, her surroundings obscuring the details of her body and actions.

These vibrant works are part of Sarah Ann Weber’s semi-autobiographical series that marks two significant moments: the birth of her daughter, and her move from Los Angeles, where she had lived for a decade, to her native Chicago. title i know hera body of work that deals with the artist herself, her children, and the stark differences between the two landscapes.

Weber explores these momentous changes through works filled with growth. Los Angeles is dry and warm most of the year, while Chicago cycles through all four seasons, sometimes seemingly within the same week. Bright tropical tones contrast with soft gray and blue winter fields.

In these lush atmospheres, watercolor flecks and bright florals contain no clear boundaries. The artist draws on the tradition of window paintings and portraits depicting mothers and children, incorporating architectural structures and tender domestic moments into her predominantly botanical scenes. Everyone seems to acquiesce to the rapidly changing environment, acknowledging that change and renewal from the inside out are inevitable.
