5 reasons why I applied to Capital One Ventures

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card is known as one of the top premium travel cards on the market, and it’s easy to see why. The card combines simplicity, value, and truly useful perks in a way that few competitors can. With the strongest welcome offer of 2021 now available, I finally decided it was time to add a premium card to my wallet.

That’s why the Venture X is my next card of choice.

Huge welcome bonus

I’ve had my eye on Venture X for a while, but the current welcome bonus finally sealed the deal for me. The card currently offers 100,000 miles after you spend $10,000 in the first six months — the strongest bonus we’ve seen since launching in 2021. The six-month spending window makes this easier to achieve than most premium cards, and the monthly fee is just under $1,700.

Many high-end cards only give you three months to meet the big spend requirement, which can feel like a sprint. But with Venture X, you have breathing room to earn winnings at a realistic rate. In most cases, you can meet Venture

As for the value of those miles, 100,000 miles are worth $1,000 at a flat rate of 1 cent per mile, according to TPG’s November 2025 valuation, but you can often get up to $1,850 in value by transferring to Capital One’s airline and hotel partners.

$300 annual travel credit

The Venture X’s $395 annual fee becomes less daunting once you factor in the $300 in automatically earned Capital One Travel points each year. It’s easy to use and works with flights, hotels and rental cars booked through the Capital One travel portal.

While you have a full year to use the points, I planned to use mine immediately for a last-minute vacation trip to New York City with my sister. While hotel prices can be ridiculously high this time of year, a $300 credit will help keep travel costs down, leaving room in your budget for holiday gifts, dining out, and Broadway shows. Booking hotels through the portal also earns 10 miles for every $1 spent, helping me increase my points balance while paying for my travels.

The $300 in benefits alone offset most of the $395 annual fee, bringing the effective cost down to about $95. At this price, lounge access and other ongoing benefits easily justify holding this card for the long term.

That’s the fundamental reason why the Venture X is so compelling: It offers a premium experience without the price tag of a premium card.

Premium travel benefits

This would be my first card with built-in lounge access and one of the biggest reasons I applied for it. I’ve always been the “hang out in the terminal and buy a granola bar I don’t want” type of traveler, but that era is officially over.

Venture X cardholders have access to Capital One lounges and Priority Pass lounges, which is a significant upgrade if you travel a few times a year. My first stop will be the Capital One Lounge at Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C. It’s my upcoming vacation trip back to the East Coast and I’m already counting down the days.

While my new home airport, San Francisco International Airport (SFO), doesn’t have a Capital One lounge, I like that Venture X still offers me a variety of options with Priority Pass. For me, no more overpriced granola bars or fighting for an exit in the terminal.

In addition to lounge access, the card’s perks are extremely valuable: Cardholders receive 10,000 bonus miles starting on their first anniversary, TSA PreCheck/Global Entry points (up to $120 every four years), robust travel protection, major rental car coverage, and travel delay coverage that can easily save them hundreds of dollars when things don’t go as planned.

This is the first time I’ve looked at the list of premium benefits and thought, “I’ll actually use almost all of these” – which is exactly what makes the Venture X feel like a smart long-term card.

Versatile, valuable miles

Another key reason I decided to apply for Venture X was the value and versatility of Capital One miles.

I’m pretty much monogamous with Chase Ultimate Rewards so far, and I’m waxing poetic about my life. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (See Rates & Fees) Since I got the card last year. But now that I’ve moved beyond the infancy of points and miles, I want to earn a different type of reward currency. Diversifying your points and miles is a lot like diversifying your finances: The more options you have, the better your chances of finding availability, sweet spots, and real value.

This is where risk miles come in. Capital One works with several programs that Chase doesn’t have, including Avianca LifeMiles and Qantas Frequent Flyer, opening up redemptions that weren’t available to me before.

I plan to take advantage of these transfer partners as soon as I get my welcome bonus. My mom and I have been planning a mother-daughter trip to the UK this spring, and the Venture X prize money could help make that happen.

Here are some practical ways I could use my 100,000 Capital One miles on this trip:

The biggest draw here is choice. The more options you have when award space becomes available (whether it’s business class to Europe or a boutique hotel you’ll never pay cash price for), the more likely you’ll be to book the travel you actually want, not just the travel your existing points and miles allow.

Generous income from daily shopping

Like many others, my purchases don’t always fall neatly into the rewards category, and that’s where Venture X comes in. You earn 2 miles per dollar spent on every purchase, which means I can use it as an all-purpose card and not have to worry about missing out on rewards.

For travel bookings, the card becomes even more powerful, earning:

  • Earn 10 miles for every $1 spent on hotel and rental car bookings with Capital One Travel
  • Earn 5 miles for every $1 spent on flights and vacation rentals booked with Capital One Travel

This setup is one of the easiest among premium cards for those who want a simple yet powerful earn rate without having to remember categories. This is an aspect of Venture X that doesn’t get enough recognition. Yes, the card has premium benefits, but the daily earnings structure is inherently valuable.

If you want an easy way to earn big rewards on every purchase and your spending fluctuates like mine, Venture X makes it super easy.

bottom line

Venture For my upcoming travels – especially Europe this spring – the timing couldn’t be better.

If you’re still looking for a premium card that offers substantial value without a hefty annual fee, the Venture X is one of the most compelling options.
